Artist's Comments

For our Steampunk fairytales cosplay group, my character was the Big Bad Wolf, portrayed as a denizen of London's seedy underworld. Nothing says 'steampunk' quite like inexplicable gadgets, so I whipped up this retractable claw device.

It's built from umbrella armatures and coyote bones, with the armatures mounted in place through a thin brass mesh. That mesh was sewn down to the glove, with a bit of black rabbit fur sewn on over it as a cover. On top of that, As a reminder of the whole steampunk part, a small power pack. (It may seem familiar to those who liked my first wrench raygun.)

If I wear the costume again at next year's Dragon*con, this baby's going to get some renovations. Namely, having the armatures glued into the mesh (a flash of brilliance that came after I sewed the fur into place), and some form of catch so that the claws will stay retracted even when gravity tries to persuade them otherwise. Both circumstances made this particular device hell on the wrist, but it's not until we learn the problem that we seek a solution.

Hey, cool concept. Rather terrifying if they actually extend! I can see how they might be hard on the wrist.. perhaps some further bracing down the forearm, for added support...
:iconwalkwithoutrhythm:
Thanks! The extension does look pretty cool, as the armatures open to a taller angle and the claw tips are still about even with the baseline. The crosspiece catches on the knucklebone groove, so they don't go completely sprawled out and lock up. :P

I may change up the order of them next time, so the smallest claw isn't the first.. that and give them more even spacing/angles, for a more orderly overall appearance. Bracing might be a good idea.. I'll see if I can work with a flat piece under them for stability first, then see if it needs support further down.

Certainly! Hopefully we can establish a place for photos early, and then go around for random pictures. Probably Hilton or Sheraton, for less crowds + better lighting.

Pre-hug introductions are appreciated, though I suppose anonymous hugs are preferable to the anonymous tail-pullings that came this year. :P

LOL xD
I don't think I went to the Hilton or Sheraton at all this last year (my first D*Con) o___o

I was always at the Hyatt or Marriott xD

I'll be wearing several costumes, and the best place to plan for meeting up is the D*Con forums c:

Hilton has the walk of fame (aka where the celebrities hide out) usually, and the game rooms downstairs... Plus some of the more sciencey track rooms. Upstairs they have a few intermediate floors that lower the vertigo factor for guests, and those are usually pretty clear and well lit.

Sheraton had some panels, as well as most of the fan-group tables. I think someone had a TARDIS for photoshoots out there too, but it left before our group got together on Sunday. :(

I'll check out the D*C forums, it's probably better than organizing thru cosplay.com or LJ like we were doing.

Sweet c:

I need to hop on there and announce my costumes for this next year > >;
